Role playing “kitties” has been a current theme in our classroom. We were in the process of redesigning our dramatic play area when I decided to allow the girls the opportunity to join in on the planning. I read, The Kittens First Full Moon by Kevin Henkes hoping to stir up some ideas about kitties in the dramatic play area and I wasn’t disappointed. We did some brainstorming and The Moonlight Café for Kitties was created. Dramatic play gives the girls a wonderful space in which to engage in creative play as well as generating great opportunities for practicing literacy and math skills along the way. Our girls always love helping create engaging play scenarios as it gives them such ownership on their learning journey.
What do we need for the, kitty hotel, and should we give our hotel a name?
Naming the kittens
What do you think about our kitties?
And the fun begins....
I’m going to read her a book.
This is her name. I signed Shiny in.
Now I’m going to read to her.
I’m giving her a bath.
Would you put this book back please? Thank you
It’s time to go to bed now.
It’s nighttime. Look at the moon.
I need to get her to sleep.
You need to get her some food.
We need to draw for them too.
Good Morning Kitties.
I need to comb and brush your hair.
Do you want some milk?
My kitty needs to go to school.
Now, let’s read them a story before school.
Its 8:00 time to go…Give your mommy a kiss and say good-by
Let's go on a trip!!
Disneyland...let's go to the airport!
Let's see the princess castle.
Let's read on the plane.
Do you want to read a story ? No, I'm going to feed mine.
Once upon a time...the cow jumped over the moon...The end.
Were here... were here!! Let's go!!!
Reflection: I enjoy watching the girls begin to build cooperation with others as they play in a group together. They are developing imagination and creativity. Imaginary play offers the girls so many benefits such as shaprening social skills to building memory. It's wonderful to see them absorb real life experiences.
