Our physical education teacher, Mrs. Parsons, does a great job of helping your girls MOVE IT! The pre-kindergarten curriculum that she integrates focuses mainly on gross motor development, especially at this time of year. The development of large muscles is important for the girls as they walk in a line, maneuver on the playground, get in and out of the car, and walking up and down the stairs. Did you know that gross motor development also lays an important foundation for reading and writing? When reading and writing, a child's eyes must follow along the entire length of the page...moving from left to right - using both sides of the brain and both sides of the body. It is a complicated process for their little minds, but nurturing their gross motor skills will strengthen those practices and make writing and reading come more easily. And the BEST part of all this?!? The girls are having an absolute BALL while they are building important skills for their brains!
In this class, Mrs. Parson's was using colorful beanbags to introduce the girls to BALANCE. They also practiced their understanding of directional words. They practiced standing on a line with both feet, taking a step, and throwing.
In this class, Mrs. Parsons focused on hopping in the hoola hoops and following directions with the bean bags. They tossed bean bags into buckets, used the catapult to toss the beanbags, and threw the beanbags into the hoops. How fun!
And the fun just never stops! They reviewed shapes with a little geometry thrown in as they folded scarves, watching the shape change before their eyes! They got to throw the scarves and practice their catching. They also had fun dancing with the scarves and freezing when the music stopped! Mrs. Parson's is the best! How does she think of all these fun things?!? AND they are learning SO much stuff...important stuff...for their physical development AND their academic development, too! WOW!
