We are really enjoying books by award-winning author Lois Ehlert. When we do an author study in pre-kindergarten, we read as many books as we can by that author and "study" that author's style of writing and illustrating. Lois Ehlert uses the collage technique in her illustrations. She uses everything from loose parts to cutting shapes from paper that she has watercolored. Ms. Ehlert loves to use shapes to make pictures of animals and includes fabric scraps in her art. The girls enjoyed using some of her techniques to make collages of winter birds. They are beautiful!
Step 1 - painting a snowy background - the girls used white and blue paint to swirl a snowy page and sprinkled glitter and borax to add some "real snow" effects
Step 2 - the girls added trees to the snowy background - choosing from different patterns of brown, cutting trunks and branches
Step 3 - painting with watercolor for paper to make birds
Step 4 - adding birds by cutting shapes from watercolor paper - using Ms. Ehlert's style of creating birds by collage
Enjoy the slideshow of the girls beautiful winter birds...
