Christmas is on its way and the girls are enjoying many new Christmas related activities, while also reinforcing the many skills we continue to work on. We are busy painting and creating pine trees. The girls have learned that as the pine cones fall to the ground there are many seeds that then travel and are planted into the soil. These seeds then grow into more pine trees. Of course, our painted trees will become Christmas trees displayed in the hall as we add to our houses. It will become our own "Starry Nights" as we also add lights to our Christmas scene. The many wonderful smells of Christmas are everywhere in our classroom including flour at the tactile table smelling of cloves and cinnamon, play dough that has the scent of peppermint, and there is fresh pine every where for the girls to relate to the fresh scent of pine as we are discussing pine trees.
Our next few weeks will also include activities about how we can do for others. Our first activity will be to make bird feeders for our friends the birds (what better use of our pine cones that we found on our nature walk)! As we think about and work on our "gifts" to others, we hope that the girls will reflect and understand how happy our hearts are as we give special gifts of love in many different ways. Other activities will include making special gifts for one of our Junior Kindergarten classes, baking gingerbread cookies for our wonderful dining room staff who make sure we get a delicious lunch each day, and, last but certainly not least, gifts for the people in our lives that we love the most.....our parents! We are hoping that by doing for others that the girls learn a very important thing about life. That "it is better to give than receive". It will be a very special time for each of us as we share the joy of Christmas with those we love and appreciate, even our friends the birds!
We have provided some pictures of the girls very engaged in our classroom activities and the skills these activities support. Enjoy these pictures, they are learning so much while having so much fun! In the weeks to follow, also enjoy our "Gifts of the Heart" as we experience the true meaning of Christmas while reaching out to show our love of others at this special time of year.
