While still continuing our recycling project introduced in our blog last week, the girls are learning about cycles that are happening this time of year. Planting seeds begins the life cycle of growing flowers, and this study continues this week with our many centers and stories supporting this particular topic. Author Eric Carle's wonderful story about The Tiny Seed gave us a great look into the life cycle of a sunflower seed and, at the end of the story, the cycle starts all over again! It is a wonderful story about life cycles and the girls loved hearing the story and watching the story on the smart board. We will soon plant sunflower seeds and watch them grow. We will also learn about other cycles that make us know the wonderful season of Spring is here! Please view the slide show to view our centers this week.

Pre-K has started a wonderful project and study that focuses on taking care of our environment by recycling materials for different purposes. "Recycling" has been a big word we have been discussing, and the girls are grasping the meaning of recycling with good understanding. In conjunction with Evergreen Packaging, a company that manufactures milk and juice cartons used in 90% of the nation's schools, our project has taken off! Evergreen Packaging is the sponsor of two school related programs that help support sustainability, education, and healthy habits of our nation's youth. We will be a part of what is called the Carton Two Garden project. The girls have chosen to collect their milk cartons from lunch each day and plant flower seeds in the cartons to later plant at the Hutchison farm this spring. Carton and all will be planted as an example of using a product designed for one purpose and recycling for another purpose. We will later add a second activity to this study called Made by Milk. In this part of the project the girls will brainstorm, collaborate, and design something that can be constructed using additional milk cartons.
Both of these programs are really engaging for the girls and the Stem-based lessons and learning will be invaluable. Meegan Meakin, our farm Horticulturist, has met and talked to the girls and has guided them in the initial planting process, while discussing recycling and planting in relation to the Hutchison farm. We are definitely recycling with a purpose! We will keep you posted through the blog as our project continues.

The girls are enjoying all the new Spring centers this week! They are happy, learning, and glad to be back in school after our break. The following skills continue to be supported:

The girls have been working hard to discern and distinguish the ways they look alike and the ways they look different. They continue to realize that they are each very unique individuals. While working on painting and drawing themselves, the girls have been asked to describe themselves as they are drawing. After painting themselves they were then asked to tell a story about the painting. As they were dictating a story, we recorded some very descriptive and fun imaginative thoughts and ideas. Story telling encourages creativity at its best! We have included a few of each activity for you to enjoy. We have also been busy creating ourselves using clay and wire. The girls then got to paint the clay pieces they had created, again paying close attention to the details of their own individual looks. They even chose a dress to finish the "look" of their own special "ME" creations.
Friendship and how to be a good friend have been special points of conversation through this study and the girls are developing a great awareness for showing kindness to their friends as we continue to have these conversations. This week we will be creating a "Family Tree" and comparing our individual families. Graphing our families will be an activity we will also be working with as a math activity.

We had a special visit from Dr. LaLa Adams who practices dentistry. She taught the girls the proper way to brush their teeth and the importance of it. She also discussed the "healthy foods" and how they help prevent tooth decay. The girls were delighted to get a treasure from the Treasure Box and a toothbrush. Thanks to Dr. Adams!
We can't believe that we are heading into the last quarter of our year. The girls have grown in so many ways, and it is amazing to see the development and maturity each has experienced since August. We wish everyone a restful, fun, and happy Spring break. Relax and enjoy your sweet girls, whether traveling or just having a little "down" time at home!
