We have been working really hard to recognize not only our own names, but also the names of friends. Some fun activities that encouraged name recognition were painting our names and glittering the first letter to emphasize that we always begin our names with an upper case letter. Name houses were another activity that helped reinforce math skills of shape recognition, counting, and comparing size and height of our houses depending on how many letters are in our name. The girls quickly realized that the tallest houses belonged to the friends that had the most letters. In circle time, we all compared our houses and arranged them shortest to tallest across the carpet. Wow, some were really tall and some were much shorter! The girls have been talking about "long sticks" and "short sticks" as they begin to learn letter formation when writing the letters of H, F, E, and L. We worked with straight sticks in small groups forming letters with straight lines, and rolled and cut play dough with scissors to strengthen our fine motor skills and work on our cutting skills We even took turns at the smart board writing and drawing short and long lines drawing the letter H and E. All in all, our first full week of school has been busy, fun, and very rewarding as we watch these sweet girls become more acclimated and comfortable in the classroom. Music, Spanish, and Chinese have been wonderful special times for the girls as they love all the fun activities planned by these very special teachers.
